Data integration experts lead Europe’s contribution to global Sustainable Development Goal Indicators

UN-GGIM: Europe has announced that its data integration working group will provide the region’s contribution to the global indicator framework for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Geospatial, cadastral and statistical experts from 17 UN Member States are working closely with the UN Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) to develop monitoring methodologies and make these available to their European colleagues.

In addition, Pier-Giorgio Zaccheddu from Germany and Fabio Volpe from Italy are representing UN-GGIM: Europe on the IAEG-SDG working group on geospatial information, which focuses on understanding the data’s value and role in managing, monitoring and measuring the indicators.

Pier-Giorgio Zaccheddu, Technical Leader, UN-GGIM: Europe working group on data integration said: “We are delighted to contribute to the geo-dimension of the UN SDG indicators and to facilitate the exchange of information between IAEG-SDG and the European National Statistical Institutes and National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registry Authorities.”

“This provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the value of geospatial data in measuring, monitoring and managing sustainable development. We look forward to promoting examples of national best practice from across Europe to show how it can also support processes to achieve the SDGs, and to investigating where the geospatial community can work with others to use demographic, statistical and environmental data alongside geographical location.”

UN-GGIM: Europe’ working group on data integration has already delivered a report defining priority user needs for combinations of data as well as recommendations for implementation and managing any side effects.
