UN-GGIM: Europe Working Group A select core data themes for Europe

UN-GGIM: Europe Working Group A on Core Data organised a workshop on 13-14 January 2016 which was hosted by IGN France in Paris. The purpose of the workshop was to decide on the scope of core data by selecting the sub-set of INSPIRE themes considered as core for Europe. Core data aim at being of wide use in many countries; in practice the selection was driven by user requirements to analyse, achieve and monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agreed by Member States within the United Nations for the 2030 Development Agenda.

After deep preparatory work and passionate discussion, WGA selected the following data themes as core: Addresses, Administrative Units, Hydrography, Cadastral Parcels, Transport Network, Geographical Names, Elevation, Land Cover, Ortho-imagery, Buildings, Statistical Units, Land Use, and Area Management.

The next stage of the work group is to draft detailed data specifications for each of the selected 13 themes.
